CLASSIFICATION OF MATTER
General classification of matter is based on arrangement of particles, attraction between them, inter-particle distance etc
STATES OF MATTER
SOLID
- Solids are the materials that have a definite shape, definite volume, and distinct boundaries
- particles are closely packed
- Normally, solid materials have negligible compressibility
- Even if an external force is applied, solid material has a tendency to maintain its shape
- eg: stone, wood, plastics, iron, etc
LIQUID
- Liquids are the materials does not have a fixed shape, but they have a fixed volume
- particles are loosely packed
- Liquids have the shape of the container in which they are kept
- Liquids have a tendency to flow and can change its shape too
- eg: water, petrol, oil, milk, etc.
GAS
- Gases are matter in the form of air, which does not definite size and shape
- Particles are so loosely packed
- Gas can be compressed by applying pressure
- Gasses shows the property of diffusing very fast into other gases
- eg: oxygen, smoke, carbon-di-oxide
Including this 3, the matter is classified into 7 states
- Solid
- Liquid
- Gas
- Plasma
- Bose-Einstein condensate
- Quark-gluon plasma
- Degenerated matter
