REACTION OF METALS WITH OXYGEN

Metals generally react with oxygen and produce metal oxide

Metal + oxygen -->metal oxide 

Rusting of iron is the formation of iron oxide when iron reacts with  moisture and oxygen in the atmosphere and produces iron oxide which is known as rust

Iron +oxygen +water-->iron oxide(iron oxide is also known as ferrous oxide )

(NOTE:- Burning is reacting with oxygen when metals are burned means it reacts with oxygen and produces metal oxide )

Eg:- magnesium burns in the air with a dazzling white  flame and white ashes are produced that white ashes are magnesium oxide

Metal oxides are basic in nature. Metal oxide which is soluble in water turns red litmus blue. Magnesium oxide mixed with  water turns red litmus blue

Magnesium oxide + water——>    magnesium hydroxide 

MgO + H₂O——> Mg(OH)₂
