Magnetic compass is a magnetised need always align in north-south direction of the earth. It is used to find directions while navigating especially by sailors.

Why a magnetic compass always shows a north-south direction?/ why freely suspended magnet always align in north south direction?

The magnetic needle inside a compass always be in a north-south direction because of the magnetic field of the earth (the magnetic field of the earth is due to the molten materials inside the earth's crust)
