INTERCONVERSION OF MATTER
IMPORTANT TERMS RELATED TO CHANGE OF STATE
VAPORISATION
Change of state of a matter from liquid state to gaseous state on heating is known as vaporisation.
Vaporisation happens at boiling point of substance.
EVAPORATION
Change of state of a matter from liquid to gas at any temperature is called evaporation.
CONDENSATION
Change of state of a matter from gaseous state to liquid state on cooling is known as condensation.
when a gas is cooled(temperature reduced) it changes to liquid. As the temperature goes below the boiling point of a substance it will completely converted to liquid.
MELTING (FUSION)
Conversion of solid state of a matter to liquid state on heating is known as melting or fusion.
Melting happens at melting point of a substance. When temperature reaches above the melting point it completely changes to liquid.
SOLIDIFICATION
Conversion of liquid state of a matter to solid state on cooling is known as solidification.
When temperature of liquid reaches its freezing point it start changing to solid and will be converted completely into solid as it temperature goes below freezing point.
SUBLIMATION
Change of state of matter directly from solid state to gaseous state without changing to liquid state on heating is known as sublimation.
Some substance can change directly from solid to gas without changing to liquid state for example camphor, naphthalene ball etc
DEPOSITION
Change of state of matter directly from gaseous state to solid state without changing to liquid state on cooling is called deposition.
eg:- camphor, naphthalene ball
