FACTORS AFFECTING EVAPORATION

What are the different factors affecting rate of evaporation?

There are several factors affecting rate of evaporation. Rate of evaporation depends on physical quantities such as temperature, humidity, wind speed and surface area

1.Effect of temperature on evaporation

As temperature increases rate of evaporation also increases.
Increase in temperature of a liquid increase kinetic energy of particles in that liquid. Thus more number of particles in the surface get enough kinetic energy to get converted in to vapour state.

2.Effect of humidity on evaporation

As humidity increases rate of evaporation decrease
Humidity is the amount of water vapour present in the atmosphere. Atmospheric air can only hold specific amount of water vapour at given temperature. So if humidity is high means already amount of water vapour in atmosphere is high so further evaporation will slow down, unless atmospheric temperature is increased.

3.Effect of wind speed on evaporation

As wind speed increases rate of evaporation also increase.
As wind speed increases the atmospheric water vapour will be move away in faster rate because of that humidity decrease so rate of evaporation increase.

4. Surface area and evaporation

As surface area increases rate of evaporation also increase.
Evaporation is a surface phenomenon(particles on surface that gains enough kinetic energy to escape from force of attraction of other particles will be converted to gas). Because of that if surface area is more rate of evaporation will be high.
