ACIDS AND BASES


 ACIDS 

  • Acids are the substance with sour in taste
  • They contain H+ ions 
  • Eg:- lemon juice, orange juice, vinegar 

BASES

  • Bases are the substance with bitter in taste and feel soapy on touching 
  • They contain OH- ions
  • Eg:- baking soda, ammonium hydroxide 

NEUTRAL SOLUTION 

Solution which is neither acidic nor basic is known as neutral solution.

SOME ACIDS AND THEIR SOURCES 

  1. Acetic acid is found in vinegar 
  2. Formic acid is found in ant’s sting
  3. Citric acid is found in fruits such as oranges, lemons etc.
  4. Lactic acid is found in milk and milk products like curd.
  5. Oxalis acid is found in spinach.
  6. Ascorbinsäure acid(vitamin C) is found in Amal, citrus fruits like lemon and orange.
  7. Tartaric acid is found in tamarind,grapes,unripe mangoes etc.

SOME BASES AND THEIR SOURCES 

  1.  Calcium hydroxide found in lime water.
  2. Ammonium hydroxide found in window cleaner.
  3. Sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide is found in soap.
  4. Magnesium hydroxide is found in milk of magnesia.
