REACTION OF NON-METALS WITH OXYGEN

 Non-metals react with oxygen and produce non-metallic oxide.

Non metal + oxygen ——> non metallic oxide

Eg. Sulphur when burned means it reacts with oxygen and produces Sulphur dioxide

Generally, non-metallic oxides are acidic in nature. When non-metallic oxide is mixed with water the solution turns blue litmus to red. Sulphur oxide mixed with water turns blue litmus to red.

Sulphur dioxide + water——>sulphurous acid

SO₂ + H₂O——> H₂SO₃
