DECOMPOSITION REACTION
A reaction in which a single reactant absorbs energy and decomposes to produce 2 or more products is known as decomposition reaction.
There are different types of decomposition reactions- Thermal decomposition reaction, electrolytic decomposition, photolytic decomposition etc.
THERMAL DECOMPOSITION REACTION
A reaction in which a single reactant absorbs heat energy and produce two or more products is known as thermal decomposition reaction.
Example of thermal decomposition reaction:- when ferrous sulphate crystal is heated it looses water content in it and decomposes to ferric oxide, sulphur dioxide and sulphur trioxide.
2FeSO₄+ heat ——> Fe₂O₃+ SO₂+ SO₃
ELECTROLYTIC DECOMPOSITION REACTION
A reaction in which a single reactant is decomposed by electrical energy to produce two or more product is known as electrolytic decomposition reaction.
Example of electrolytic decomposition reaction :- electrolysis of water, when electric current is passed through water it will decompose and produce hydrogen and oxygen.
2H₂O + electric energy——> 2H₂ + O ₂
PHOTOLYTIC DECOMPOSITION REACTION
A reaction in which a single reactant is decomposed by light energy to produce two or more products is known as photolytic decomposition reaction.
Example of photolytic decomposition reaction :- when silver chloride is exposed to sun light it will decomposes and form silver and chlorine.
2AgCl + sun light——> 2Ag + Cl₂
