SOLUTION
A solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances.
A solution has a solvent and a solute.
- Solvent- Component of solution that usually found in larger amount which dissolves the other component in it.
- Solute - Component of the solution usually present in lesser quantity that is dissolved in a solvent
Examples
- Sugar dissolved in water. Where sugar is the solute and water is the solvent.
- Soda water if solution of carbon dioxide dissolved in water. Where carbon dioxide is the solute and water is the solvent.
- Tincture of iodine - a mixture of iodine and alcohol. Where iodine is the solute and alcohol is the solvent.
Properties of solution
- Solution is a homogeneous mixture
- Particles of a solution are very small they cannot be seen by naked eyes ( particle size is smaller than 1 Nanometer = 10−⁹ meter in diameter)
- Because of smaller particle size they don’t scatter beam of light passing through it.
- Particles of solution cannot be separated by filtration.
- Solution is stable because solute particles don’t settle down when left undisturbed.
