SOLUTION

A solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances.

A solution has a solvent and a solute.

  • Solvent- Component of solution that usually found in larger amount which dissolves the other component in it.
  • Solute - Component of the solution usually present in lesser quantity that is dissolved in a solvent
Examples
  1. Sugar dissolved in water. Where sugar is the solute and water is the solvent.
  2. Soda water if solution of carbon dioxide dissolved in water. Where carbon dioxide is the solute and water is the solvent.
  3. Tincture of iodine - a mixture of iodine and alcohol. Where iodine is the solute and alcohol is the solvent.

Properties of solution

  • Solution is a homogeneous mixture
  • Particles of a solution are very small they cannot be seen by naked eyes ( particle size is smaller than 1 Nanometer = 10−⁹ meter in diameter)
  • Because of smaller particle size they don’t scatter beam of light passing through it.
  • Particles of solution cannot be separated by filtration.
  • Solution is stable because solute particles don’t settle down when left undisturbed.
