SUSPENSION

A suspension is a heterogeneous mixture of two or more substances in which solute particles do not dissolve but remain Suspended through out the bulk of the medium.

Examples of suspensions

  • Mixture of sugar and stones
  • Mixture of oil and water
  • Mixture of iron fillings and sand
  • Mixture of copper sulphate and potassium permanganate

Properties of suspension

  1. Suspension is a heterogeneous mixture.
  2. The particles of suspensions can be seen by naked eye.
  3. The particles of a suspension scatter a beam of light passing through it and make its path visible.
  4. The solute particles settle down when a suspension kept undisturbed. When particles settle down, the suspension breaks and it doesn’t scatter light any more.
  5. Suspension can be separated from the mixture by the process of filtration.
